1) Student Medical and Dental Education Program
  • FREE (full tuition, housing, and meals) 
  • six-week summer program offers freshman and sophomore college students intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation.
  • Different sites across the nation (Columbia, Yale, Duke, Howard,Case Western etc)
  • Both dental and medical experience in clinical locations. (work in the same labs current dental student work in)
  • Stipend varies by location

2) The University at Albany Summer Research Program (UASRP) 
  • Eight weeks (June – July), college credit
  • Stipend: $2500  
  • Room and board                                        
  •  Should have a genuine interest in research, and learning leading towards a Ph.D.

3) 2011 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity at UMass Medical School
  •   Ten Week, non-credit Program - May 29, 2011 - August 5, 2011 
  • Stipend of $4,000
  • Local housing is arranged by the program and is heavily funded by the program.

4) Temple University School of Medicine Undergraduate Summer Research Program
  • Deadline April 1, 2011 
  • ten-week program (June 6- August 5, 2011)
  • Provides direct exposure to biomedical research via hands-on experience in a project in the areas of hematology, cardiovascular and pulmonary research. 
  • Research options are:
1.The Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center which focuses on research related to platelet function, blood coagulation, neutrophil activation and fibrin formation,
2.The Cardiovascular Research Center with research related to the function of the cardiovascular system, and
3.The Temple Lung Center whose primary research focus is on pulmonary diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

2) 2011 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity at UMass Medical School
Deadline is March 12, 2011 including supplemental application materials.
Program Features
  •          Summer Research Fellows are placed in laboratories for ten weeks at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center with the investigator serving as a mentor, role model and advisor.
Duration
·         Ten Week, non-credit Program - May 29, 2011 - August 5, 2011
Requirements
  • All participants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and at least eighteen years of age to apply. You can not be receiving funding from any other sources during the program. 
·          1. If you meet at least ONE of the following eligibility requirements you should check off NIH on your application:
  • ·          Member of a racial or ethnic group under-represented in biomedical research (African American, Native American [Hawaiian and Alaskan] and Hispanic/Latino
  • ·          Family meets criteria for disadvantaged (economic or educational) status
  •           Presently receive accommodations under the American With Disabilities Act
·         2. If you do not meet any of the criteria above, please check off SURE funding.
  • Either Way you will receive one form of funding (Sure funding if you meet a req. from part1 or NIH if you do not meet a req from part 1)
BENEFITS
  •          Summer Research Fellows will receive a stipend of $4,000. Local housing is arranged by the program and is heavily funded by the program.
  •          Summer Research Fellows are required to attend all seminars, lectures, group discussions, luncheon lectures, socializers and field trips and live in the housing provided.
  •       You are also expected to attend the full ten week program. If the start date of the program conflicts with your final exams, arrangements can be made to have the exam administered here at UMMS utilizing the in house examination service.
  •          Summer Research Fellows are required to create and present a professionally prepared scientific poster.

STEP UP in Health-related Research
The Short Term Education Program for Undergraduate and Predoctoral students, STEP UP in Health-related Research is designed to offer research training to academically qualify underrepresented students in the areas of Hematology, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research.
The ten-week program (June 6- August 5, 2011) offers research experience to selected academically outstanding minority undergraduate and predoctoral students. Individuals with disabilities are also encouraged to apply. The STEP UP in Health-related Research is offering an opportunity to individuals interesting in pursuing a career in biomedical research. The students work in the laboratories of well recognized scientists and interact with postdoctoral fellows and advanced students. The participants receive hands-on experience in a research environment while working on a specific project for ten weeks and be given the opportunity to continue their training in consecutive years. The STEP UP introduces the students to biomedical research, scientific integrity, scientific thinking, critical evaluation and documentation and analysis of results. The participants present their research projects at a symposium at the end of the program and at any appropriate research conferences of the scientific community.

The goals of the program are:
1. To provide the selected participants with direct exposure to biomedical research via hands-on experience in a project in the areas of hematology, cardiovascular and pulmonary research.
2. To establish a productive interaction between the students and the mentors, postdoctoral fellows and advance students.
3. To offer information on biomedical careers and to stimulate the students’ interest in pursuing careers in biomedical research.
4. To guide the students in the process of choosing, preparing and applying for a biomedical research career.
5. To encourage the current students and alumni to continue the established professional network.

Areas of Research Offered by the Program:
The STEP UP in Health-related Research will utilize the infrastructure of three existing Research Centers at Temple:
1.                  The Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center which focuses on research related to platelet function, blood coagulation, neutrophil activation and fibrin formation,
2.                  The Cardiovascular Research Center with research related to the function of the cardiovascular system, and

Eligibility:
Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic minorities and others who are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research (e. g., individuals with disabilities) and who have at least one year of undergraduate education or pre-doctoral students are encouraged to apply. Previous research experience is a plus but is not required.
You must be a citizen or non-citizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment. Individuals on temporary or student visas are ineligible.
